I just spent over R$1,300 to join the sports club at Palmeiras in central São Paulo. When I tried using the pool, they refused to allow me in because I was wearing a plain black pair of O'Neill swimming shorts. These are banned. Only Speedo-style swimwear is allowed.
I asked why. They refused to give me an answer other than "this is the rule". So I demanded to see the club directors. I filmed the directors explaining why O'Neill shorts are not allowed in their sports club.
They have no answer - just "tradition"... swimwear from California is not good enough in São Paulo. I bought these O'Neill shorts from the HQ of the company, Santa Cruz in California. I saw many people there swimming and wearing these shorts, but in Brazil it is not allowed.
The directors explained further that it is for "health reasons" - so I would be interested to hear from O'Neill, who might be able to shed some light on the health impacts of wearing their shorts. Palmeiras says that shorts introduce germs into the pool...
I quit the club and demanded a refund. I don't want to be part of a club with archaic and ridiculous rules and then treated like an idiot when I have the insolence to ask why the rules are this way.
If you understand Portuguese then you can hear the directors all arguing that this is just how the club has always been and nobody has ever asked to wear O'Neill shorts before - they are offended that I even asked why the rule exists...

O'Neill Brazil says:
"I do not know the rules and regulations of the club, but if [Palmeiras] really bans surf shorts in the swimming pool, these rules have to be reviewed immediately. I never heard anything similar before and cannot understand the logic behind such a strange decision.
Our shorts are made with the best materials in the market and I cannot see the difference in terms of risk between swimming trunks and surf shorts, as long as they are both clean when used in a swimming pool."

Gastei mais de R$ 1.300 para me associar ao clube de esportes no Palmeiras, no centro de São Paulo. Quando eu tentei usar a piscina, eles me baniram porque eu estava usando um par de shorts preto liso de banho, da O'Neill. Estes são proibidos. Só sungas tipo Speedo sao permitidas.
Eu perguntei por quê. Eles se recusaram a me dar uma resposta diferente de "esta é a regra". Então eu exigi ver os diretores do clube. Filmei os diretores explicando porque os shorts O'Neill não são permitidos em seu clube esportivo.
Eles não têm uma resposta - apenas a "tradição" ... swimwear da Califórnia não é bom o bastante em São Paulo. Comprei estes calções O'Neill da sede da empresa, de Santa Cruz, na Califórnia. Eu vi muitas pessoas lá nadando e usando estes calções, mas no Brasil não é permitido.
Os diretores explicaram ainda que é por "razões de saúde" - sendo assim, eu estaria interessado em ouvir da propria O'Neill, que pode ser capaz de esclarecer os impactos na saúde do uso de seus shorts.
Deixei o clube e exigi uma restituição. Eu não quero ser parte de um clube com regras arcaicas e ridículas e, em seguida, tratado como um idiota quando eu tive a petulância de perguntar por que as regras são assim.
Se você entende Português, então você pode ouvir a todos os diretores argumentando que esta é apenas a forma como o clube sempre foi e ninguém nunca pediu para usar shorts O'Neill antes - eles ficam ofendidos, mesmo pelo fato de eu ter perguntado por que a regra existe ...
O'NEILL BRASIL DIZ:
"Respondendo sua perguntas: 1)Desconheço os estatutos do clube, mas se ele realmente proibe bermudas de surf no ambiente da piscina, deve ser revisto imediatamente. Nunca ouvi falar de nada parecido e não consigo entender a lógica por trás de uma decisão tão estranha. 2)Nossas bermudas são confeccionadas com os melhores tecidos disponíveis no mercado e não consigo ver qual seria a diferença de risco entre uma sunga e uma bermuda, desde que ambas estejam limpas na hora de ingressar no recinto da piscina.
Se precisar de algo mais é só entrar em contato novamente."
